At the International Transport Forum in Leipzig, Sheila Watson, Deputy Director & Director of Environment and Research, introduced The Real Urban Emissions Initiative (TRUE) to delegates at the Open Stage Café.

She discussed how the initiative was borne out of the Dieselgate scandal, which revealed that some vehicles were producing far higher emissions than manufacturers stated. A seminar and report from FIA Foundation highlighted the need for independent checks on real world emissions performance, and the TRUE initiative is intended to fulfil this objective by publishing data for which policy makers and consumers can use to inform their choices.

The TRUE initiative has brought together the FIA Foundation, ICCT, C40, Transport & Environment, and Global NCAP in a new partnership, which will culminate with the launch of a car emissions ranking system in June this year.

Speaking during the event, Sheila highlighted that in Europe, more than 11,000 people die early because of excess diesel NOx emissions every year and that the Mayors of London and Paris have already partnered with TRUE to measure vehicle emissions in their cities.

Speaking at the event, Sheila Watson said: "Excess vehicle emissions are not victimless crimes - that is why, at the heart of TRUE is the principle of openness and transparency to inform policy making. We want all policy to be based on strong evidence, great data and clear arguments. This is what TRUE offers.”
